POSITION SUMMARY
The Clinical Informaticist reports to the Director of Clinical
Informatics and serves as a liaison between clinical, ancillary,
administrative, and Health Information Technology (HIT)
departments. The Clinical Informaticist develops and maintains
relationships with department leaders and users in the clinical
modalities this position supports. This position also stays abreast
of advancements in EHR and clinical systems and partners with
clinical leadership to incorporate these into operations.
The Clinical Informaticist ensures the electronic health record
(EHR) and clinical systems support clinical workflow, meet
stakeholder requirements, support quality, and comply with
regulations. This position also supports or leads multidisciplinary
teams through all phases of the EHR and clinical solution
development life cycle, including requirements gathering, design,
training, testing, implementation, and post implementation
review.
The Clinical Informaticist supports the mission, vision, strategic
initiatives, and quality goals of MLK Community Healthcare
(MLKCH).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Designs and optimizes the EHR and clinical solutions in support
of interdisciplinary clinical practice, clinical decision-making,
quality, and patient safety initiatives.
- Designs and supports EHR and clinical system documentation and
training; ensures system test scripts are up-to-date.
- Translates clinician requirements, in partnership with
leadership and staff, into system requirements and
specifications.
- On behalf of clinical operations, coordinates and manages the
design, implementation, testing, and training of the EHR and
clinical systems, including software validation, clinical content
development, user acceptance testing, business process
re-engineering, and post implementation review.
- Participates in workgroups and committee's related to clinical
practice standards, quality improvement, performance improvement,
root cause analysis, etc.
- Identifies clinical technology solutions to support clinical
operations by coordinating the research, evaluating solutions, and
planning the implementation.
- Facilitates communication between different clinical,
ancillary, non-clinical, and HIT user groups.
- Identifies risks, develops mitigation strategies, and
implements corrective action plans.
- Works with hospital leadership, department managers, clinicians
and physicians to facilitate, root cause analysis, problem-solving,
and ongoing communication.
- Works collaboratively with hospital leadership to manage change
from new or optimized clinical systems and provides data on
adherence to system workflow and functionality.
- Serves as the primary HIT resource to the education department
and supports ongoing hospital orientation and training.
- Assesses clinical staff's use of the EHR and clinical systems
and makes recommendations on user engagement, compliance, and
ongoing training needs.
- Uses a structured problem-solving methodology to identify and
clarify issues and then develops, implements, and evaluates
clinical solutions.
- Completes organization and HIT training requirements and
demonstrates the ability to cross-train within clinical
modalities.
- Performs clinical rounds in medical, nursing, and ancillary
departments to assess user effectiveness with the EHR system.
- Assists department leaders with the development and
documentation of downtime procedures and ensures users are trained
and readily knowledgeable of downtime processes.
- Prioritizes job responsibilities and tasks effectively and
escalates issues.
- Follows all written policies and procedures of the
hospital.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education
- Bachelor of Science degree in nursing or relevant clinical
degree.
- Associate degree acceptable based on experience.
B. Qualifications/Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience required relevant to the
scope of the health care disciplines the position supports.
- At least one to two years of clinical IT experience working
with an electronic health record data system and documentation
requirements.
- Current California Nursing license
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
- Strong understanding and proficiency in health information
technologies and emerging technologies in health care.
- Ability to interact and collaborate with all levels of internal
and external stakeholders, work cross functionally, and negotiate
among different departments and groups.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation and communications
skills, particularly with executive audiences.
- Ability to understand, explain, and solve complex
challenges.
- Exercises good judgment, identifies risk and mitigating
factors.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Must be experienced and comfortable working in a fast-paced
environment and able to deal well with change and ambiguity.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and programs, both at a
strategic level as well as a day-to-day operational level
- Ability to take initiative.
- Experience working in a high availability environment.
